Obverse description At left, a portrait vignette of the Spanish playwright and poet Lope de Vega; the central composition presents an explorer alongside an indigenous woman, a sailing ship, and a heraldic shield rendered in fine intaglio engraving; at right, a classical allegorical female figure completes the design within an ornate guilloche border.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in brown intaglio on a fine guilloche underprint, with three allegorical female figures: a large central vignette in an oval frame presents a standing classical woman draped in loose robes, while two flanking rectangular vignettes each contain a seated allegorical figure in a landscape setting, representing industry and agriculture respectively. The denomination numerals "1.000" appear in each corner, with "EL BANCO DE" at the top and "ESPAÑA" at the foot, all within an elaborate geometric border. The printer's imprint of the American Bank Note Company, New York, is visible at the lower margin.
