Macau's gold lunar issues of the 1980s were struck under the Monetary Authority established only in 1980, when Portugal — still administering the territory — formalized the pataca's regulatory framework ahead of the eventual 1999 handover negotiations. The 1000 Patacas denomination was never intended for circulation; these were bullion-backed prestige pieces aimed squarely at the Hong Kong and overseas Chinese collector market, where lunar gold commanded strong premiums throughout the decade.
KM#35 is among the lower-mintage entries in the series. The Tiger year falls in a twelve-year cycle that resonates particularly strongly with Cantonese collectors, historically driving demand above adjacent years.
