The Macanese pataca has been pegged to the Hong Kong dollar since 1977, making Macau's bullion and commemorative issues effectively decorative instruments of monetary policy rather than practical currency. This 2001 snake issue belongs to the Chinese lunar series that the Monetary Authority leaned on heavily during the final years of transition — Macau's handover to Chinese administration having occurred in December 1999, just over a year before this coin's release.
