Macau's gold lunar series launched in the early 1980s as the territory was beginning to negotiate its 1999 handover to China — a process formalized in the 1987 Sino-Portuguese Joint Declaration. The 1984 Rat issue was struck by the Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda in Lisbon, as Macau possessed no minting facility of its own.
Low mintages across the early issues in this series make the 1984 date among the harder pieces to locate today.
