Macao's gold commemorative program launched in the late 1970s as the territory's government sought hard-currency revenue through collector sales — a strategy common among smaller dependencies at the time, though Macao's proximity to Hong Kong gave it unusually direct access to Southeast Asian gold coin markets hungry for Lunar New Year issues. The 1980 Monkey is the fifth animal in the twelve-year cycle and falls in a year the Chinese calendar designates as particularly auspicious for financial matters, which drove strong demand at point of sale.
Mintage for KM#17 was capped at 2,500 pieces.
