Macau's gold Lunar series was produced under Portuguese administration — the territory wouldn't revert to China until 1997 — and issued through the Imprensa Nacional, the official government press. The 1981 Cock issue belongs to the first full cycle of Lunar strikes from Macau, a series that attracted strong speculative buying across Southeast Asian markets almost immediately upon release. Mintages were tightly controlled and predominantly absorbed by regional collectors rather than entering any meaningful circulation.
