The Banco Nacional Ultramarino's role in Macau survived long past any reasonable expectation — a Portuguese colonial-era institution still issuing currency into the twenty-first century, decades after the 1999 handover to China. The BNU retains its note-issuing privilege alongside the Banco da China (Macau), an arrangement that makes Macau one of very few jurisdictions globally with two competing commercial bank issuers operating simultaneously under a currency board system pegged to the Hong Kong dollar.

At 1000 Patacas, this is the highest denomination in the BNU's current series. Giesecke+Devrient has handled BNU Macau production for multiple series, giving the notes a consistency in print quality that the earlier offshore-printed issues lacked.
