The Banco Nacional Ultramarino's presence in Macau outlasted Portuguese sovereignty by nearly a decade — the handover to China occurred in 1999, yet BNU retained its note-issuing privilege alongside the Monetary Authority of Macao, one of two commercial banks still authorized to print currency for the territory. This arrangement is genuinely unusual: a privately-held Portuguese institution continuing to circulate legal tender under Chinese administration.
The 1000 Pataca denomination represents the highest value in the BNU series during this period. Notes from the later years of the 2005–2017 run are more readily encountered than early dates, as the series was progressively refreshed before BNU eventually ceased issuance rights in 2024.
