Issued to mark the centenary of formal banking in Nigeria, this piece commemorates the 1894 founding of the African Banking Corporation's successor institution — the Bank of British West Africa — which established the first permanent banking presence on Nigerian soil. The CBN produced this in the same year Nigeria was navigating the economic turbulence of the Abacha regime, when the naira had collapsed to a fraction of its official rate on parallel markets.
Struck in 22-carat gold at a substantial 47-plus grams, the mintage was tightly controlled and the issue circulated almost exclusively among collectors and institutional buyers abroad.
