Mozambique's 1994 coinage came four years into the country's first genuine peace process following nearly two decades of civil war between FRELIMO and RENAMO. The 1992 Rome General Peace Accords had only recently ended a conflict that had effectively destroyed the country's formal economy and gutted its monetary infrastructure. A denomination this large in coin form reflects the cumulative toll of that period's inflation on the metical.
