| 裏面の説明 | The central field is dominated by multiple staves of musical notation in high relief, reproducing a passage evocative of Sibelius's orchestral writing and serving as the primary artistic motif of the design. The denomination 1000 MK is inscribed in bold raised lettering along the upper rim, while the date 1999 appears in equally prominent lettering along the lower rim. A small mint mark appears within the field. The overall composition conveys a direct visual reference to Finnish musical heritage. |

Finland's 1000 Markkaa gold issues of the late 1990s were struck in the final years before markka coins ceased to be legal tender, with euro adoption eliminating the currency entirely by 2002. This particular piece was issued the same year Finland joined the eurozone's exchange rate mechanism — meaning the markka's days were already formally numbered when it went to press.
Sibelius himself was famously hostile to public scrutiny of his later compositional work, burning an unknown quantity of manuscripts in 1945, including what may have been a completed Eighth Symphony.
