The Reichsbank was established by the Banking Act of 14 March 1875, replacing the Prussian Bank and formally opening on 1 January 1876. This 1000 Mark note belongs to the inaugural issue of that new institution — a denomination aimed squarely at wholesale commerce and interbank settlement rather than everyday use. The fact that it was never issued almost certainly reflects the cautious rollout of Reichsbank paper in the early years, when public confidence in banknotes over specie was still being built.

Unissued examples survive in collector hands, but the absence of any circulation history makes authentication of individual specimens worth scrutiny.
