Obverse description Printed in dark brown and red on a pale paper with a fine wavy-line guilloche underprint, the obverse carries the issuer title 'Notgeld der Stadt Essen' in Gothic blackletter at the top. The denomination 'Tausend Mark' is rendered in large, bold Gothic script across the centre, with the numeral '1000' printed in red below, superimposed over a geometric octagonal underprint vignette incorporating the crowned Essen civic eagle. A multi-line redemption and authorisation text in German cursive script occupies the lower half, giving the date 19.10.1922 and referencing the Reich Finance Ministry decree, with a serial number at lower left and a manuscript signature of the Oberbürgermeister at lower right.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in red-brown on a pale guilloche-patterned ground and presents three oval vignettes arranged horizontally across the centre, each enclosing a figure allegorical of labour and industry: a seated worker at left, a central standing male figure, and a crouching worker at right, all rendered in an expressive early Weimar graphic style. The denomination numeral '1000' flanks the header inscription at the top, with the word 'MARK' set vertically along the right margin, and the words 'Tausend Mark' appear in large Gothic letterpress along the lower edge. A bold geometric angular border frames the entire design.
