Saparmyrat Niyazov — who ruled Turkmenistan as "Turkmenbashi" from independence in 1991 until his death in December 2006 — had himself depicted on the country's currency while still alive, a practice he extended aggressively across banknotes, monuments, and public architecture. This gold issue appeared the year after his death, making it a posthumous commemoration rather than another piece of the personality cult machinery he personally directed. The timing is worth noting: his successor Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow moved quickly to dismantle many Niyazov-era symbols, yet this coin was still authorized and struck in 2007.
