The Ruhnama — literally "Book of the Soul" — was written by Saparmurat Niyazov, Turkmenistan's president-for-life who styled himself Turkmenbashi, "Father of all Turkmen." He declared it a sacred text equal to the Quran, mandated its study for driving tests, university entrance exams, and civil service positions, and had a giant mechanized version built in Ashgabat that opened nightly at 8 p.m. to broadcast readings. This coin was issued the same year Niyazov died unexpectedly of heart failure, making it an unintentional memorial to one of the more extreme personality cults of the post-Soviet period.
