Issued to mark Turkmenistan's chairmanship of the Group of 77 at the United Nations in 2007, this coin was authorized under Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who had assumed the presidency just months earlier following the death of Saparmurat Niyazov — "Turkmenbashi" — in December 2006. Berdimuhamedov's early tenure was defined partly by cautious international outreach after years of Niyazov's extreme isolationism, and the G77 chairmanship offered a rare moment of formal multilateral visibility.
Ban Ki-moon had himself just taken office as UN Secretary-General in January 2007, making this one of the earliest commemorative issues to feature his likeness in an official capacity.
