Oguz Khan is the semi-legendary founding patriarch of the Oghuz Turkic peoples, claimed as a direct ancestor by Turkmens, and his invocation on coinage was central to the post-Soviet identity project Saparmurat Niyazov — self-styled "Turkmenbashi," father of all Turkmens — prosecuted with obsessive consistency until his death in December 2006, the same year this coin was struck.
The .917 fineness places it squarely in the crown gold standard, at just under 39.94 grams of total mass — yielding approximately 1.176 troy ounces of fine gold.
