Turkmenistan's wildlife coin program of the mid-2000s was issued under the presidency of Saparmurat Niyazov — "Turkmenbashi" — whose administration was simultaneously renaming months of the year after himself and family members. The Indian crested porcupine is native to the region and was an unusual choice against the more politically expected fauna.
Niyazov died in December 2006, the same year this coin was struck.
