Issued to mark the 90th birth anniversary of Heydar Aliyev, the Soviet-era KGB chief who became founding father of post-independence Azerbaijan and ruled until his death in 2003. His son Ilham succeeded him directly, and by 2013 the cult of personality surrounding the elder Aliyev had been institutionalized into state policy, architecture, and — evidently — a kilogram gold coin.
At just over a kilogram of .999 fine gold, this is among the heaviest commemorative coins ever struck by a post-Soviet central bank. Mintage figures for issues of this type from Baku are rarely published with transparency.
