Issued to mark the 60th birthday of Saparmurat Niyazov — the autocrat who styled himself "Türkmenbaşy," or Father of all Turkmens — this coin appeared at the height of his personality cult, a period during which his image adorned currency, public buildings, and a rotating gold statue in Ashgabat that turned to face the sun. Niyazov had assumed the presidency at independence in 1991 and by 2000 had renamed months of the calendar after himself and members of his family.
The .916 fineness places this squarely in the 22-karat crown gold tradition, an unusual choice for a post-Soviet issuer.
