Issued to mark the 54th birthday of Saparmurat Niyazov — who had by 1994 already assumed the title "Türkmenbaşy," meaning Father of all Turkmen — this coin belongs to a broader series of personality cult issues that Niyazov authorized throughout the 1990s as Turkmenistan's oil and gas revenues began funding increasingly elaborate state propaganda. His government eventually renamed months of the year after himself and family members.
