1000 Lire Type 1947

The 1947 vintage of this 1000 Lire type emerged at a moment when Banca d'Italia was rebuilding currency credibility from near zero — wartime inflation had rendered earlier notes almost worthless, and the public's trust in high-denomination paper was fragile. This issue predates the 1948 monetary stabilization measures that followed Italy's entry into the Marshall Plan framework.

Garrasi's design was produced entirely in-house by the Istituto Poligrafico, which had resumed full civilian output after Allied forces lifted wartime restrictions on the Rome plant. The single watermark security feature reflects the stripped-back production priorities of the period — sophisticated intaglio and thread features came later in the series.
