San Marino's 1989 commemorative program drew on the founding legend of the republic — the Dalmatian stonemason Marinus who crossed the Adriatic from the island of Rab in the early fourth century and established a Christian community on Monte Titano. Whether the man was historical or largely mythologized by medieval chroniclers remains genuinely debated, though the Catholic Church canonized him and fixed his feast on September 3rd, the date San Marino still observes as its national day.
KM#240 was struck at the Rome mint under the long-running annual coinage agreement between San Marino and Italy.
