San Marino issued this coin to mark the thousand-year anniversary of the Guaita, the First Tower, which tradition dates to 1000 AD and which remains the oldest of the three fortifications crowning Monte Titano. The bimetallic format was by 1997 firmly associated with Italian-sphere circulation coinage — Italy's own 500 lire bimetallic had circulated since 1982 — and San Marino's parallel lire series consistently mirrored that technical standard while issuing lower mintages that kept individual types collectible rather than commercial.
