Two heraldic supporters appear at the sides of the shield. The denomination L. 1000 is inscribed along the lower rim, and the mint mark R appears to the right of the shield base. The circular legend CITTA DEL VATICANO runs along the upper periphery. |

The 1984–1985 Vatican commemorative lire series documenting John Paul II's papal journeys reflects a pontificate defined by relentless travel — by 1985 he had already visited over 50 countries, a pace without precedent in the history of the papacy. The Holy See issued these coins partly as devotional objects for pilgrims, partly as hard-currency revenue, the Vatican's mint having long understood the collector market as a reliable income stream independent of Peter's Pence.
KM#191 corresponds specifically to his 1984 journeys, which included stops in South Korea, Papua New Guinea, and Canada. The Canadian visit drew over 800,000 people to a single outdoor Mass in Midland, Ontario.
