Obverse description The obverse depicts the effigies of Pope John Paul II and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I facing one another in prayer, each holding a crucifix, rendered in low relief against a plain field. The pontifical legend IOANNES PAVLVS II P.M. A. XXII curves along the upper periphery, while AN. IVB. MM. appears in the lower portion of the field, referencing the Jubilee Year 2000. The design, engraved by Laura Bedetti, reflects an ecumenical theme commemorating the historic meeting between the two religious leaders.
