1000 Leva

The Glavna Direktsiya series of 1946 was issued under the postwar provisional government as Bulgaria transitioned toward full nationalization of its financial institutions — the National Bank had not yet been reconstituted under the new political order, and this directorate filled the administrative gap. The 1000 Leva denomination was among the highest-value notes in active use at a moment when wartime inflation had already eaten deeply into the lev's purchasing power.

The "Q" suffix in the Pick reference denotes a specimen or proof variant, distinguished from the regularly issued note. Specimens from this series were produced in limited numbers and typically bear punch cancellations or overprints.
