Bulgaria's postwar finances were in serious disarray by the early 1920s — the country had emerged from World War One on the losing side, saddled with reparations under the Treaty of Neuilly and a currency under sustained inflationary pressure. The decision to commission the American Bank Note Company for this high-denomination issue was a deliberate signal of institutional credibility at a moment when public trust in Bulgarian paper money was fragile.
The involvement of Dimitar Gyudjenov and Nikola Kozhouharov — both significant figures in Bulgarian fine art of the period — is unusual. Gyudjenov in particular was a trained academic painter, and his participation in banknote design for this series gives it a character distinct from purely commercial engraving work.
