Issued the year after Diana's death in the Paris tunnel crash, this is one of dozens of memorial coins produced by smaller Commonwealth nations in 1997–98, many contracting the same private mints. Zambia's series was particularly prolific — the country issued multiple denominations and designs in this period, most intended for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation. The face value of 1000 Kwacha was nominal; in 1998 it represented only a few US cents against the collapsed kwacha.
