Issued as part of Zambia's prolific commemorative program of the early 2000s, this piece appeared the year after the Queen Mother's death in March 2002 at age 101. The Bank of Zambia had no constitutional or Commonwealth obligation to issue such a tribute — Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon held no formal role in Zambia, which had been a republic since 1964. These were essentially licensed numismatic products aimed at the collector market, produced in large quantities and widely distributed through dealer networks rather than through any Zambian retail banking channel.
