Zambia's wildlife coin program of the 2010s targeted the international collector market almost exclusively — these pieces saw no domestic circulation and were never intended to. The black rhinoceros population in Zambia had been functionally extirpated by poaching in the 1980s and 1990s, with numbers collapsing from several thousand to near zero before slow recovery efforts began under ZAWA.
Silver-plated copper-nickel on a 40mm flan is the house format for this segment of the market, produced by European private mints under licensing arrangements with smaller sovereign issuers.
