Zambia's wildlife coin program expanded aggressively in the 2010s, largely targeting the European collector market through distributors rather than circulating domestically. The 1000 Kwacha denomination itself became something of a fiction by 2014 — Zambia had rebased its currency in 2013, replacing 1000 old Kwacha with a single new Kwacha, meaning this face value was obsolete almost the moment it was struck.
