Zambia's wildlife-themed coinage has long been a vehicle for the international collector market rather than domestic circulation — the Bank of Zambia has issued novelty and commemorative pieces since the 1970s primarily for export revenue. The 1000 Kwacha denomination itself became awkward almost immediately: Zambia redenominated its currency in January 2013, replacing 1000 old Kwacha with a single new Kwacha, meaning this piece was struck the following year in a unit already rendered obsolete by the rebasing.
