The P#67 series brought the 1000 Kwacha to polymer in several regional markets during the same period, but Malawi retained paper for this issue — a practical choice given the Reserve Bank's established supply relationships and the logistical costs of transitioning the highest-denomination note while inflation was already compressing its real purchasing power.
By the mid-2020s, the 1000 Kwacha had lost substantial value against the US dollar following the 2023 devaluation that saw the kwacha lose roughly 44% of its official rate in a single adjustment.
