| Beschrijving voorzijde | The central field features a stylized textured ground from which three theatrical masks emerge in relief — a larger central mask flanked by two smaller ones, representing the comedy and tragedy masks of classical drama. Above, the crowned Croatian coat of arms is depicted at the top center, with the date '2008.' inscribed below it. The legend 'REPUBLIKA HRVATSKA' arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination '1000 KUNA' is inscribed in two lines across the lower field in bold relief against a mirrored proof background. |

Marin Držić (1508–1567) was a Ragusan playwright whose comedies — particularly Dundo Maroje — are considered the foundation of Croatian dramatic literature. He spent much of his later life in Venice and Florence, and in a bizarre coda to his theatrical career, wrote a series of secret letters to Cosimo de' Medici in 1566 proposing a conspiracy to overthrow the Ragusan aristocracy. The plot came to nothing. This coin was issued on the 500th anniversary of his birth.
