| Reverse description | Central intaglio vignette within an oval guilloche frame presents two Croatian women in elaborate regional folk costumes, standing face to face; the figure on the left wears a heavily embroidered dress with a decorated belt and headdress, while the figure on the right holds a vessel and wears a white blouse with traditional jewellery. Denomination panels "1000 KUNA" and "TISUĆU KUNA" are set within ornate cartouches to the left and right respectively, against a two-tone orange and green guilloche background. The printer's imprint "LEIPZIG - GIESECKE & DEVRIENT - BERLIN" appears in small letterpress text at the bottom centre. |

The kuna was revived as Croatia's currency unit by the Ustaše regime in 1941 — a deliberate historical reference to the medieval fur-trade denomination, and a pointed rejection of the Yugoslav dinar. By 1943, with the NDH's finances under severe strain from occupation costs and partisan warfare, notes of this denomination were being issued in quantities that accelerated rather than stabilized inflation.
Giesecke & Devrient handled the print run from Germany, as they did for several NDH issues. Vladimir Kirin, a genuinely accomplished graphic artist outside of this commission, designed across the series.
