1000 Krónur Law of 1986

Iceland's 1000 Krónur series ran under the Law of 1986 well into the 1990s, long enough to span a period when the króna had finally stabilized after decades of chronic inflation that had periodically rendered lower denominations nearly worthless. The 1000 Krónur was a workhorse denomination by then — meaningful money, handled daily.

De La Rue's production for this series is notably restrained on security features; the watermark is essentially the sole mechanical anti-counterfeiting measure, which was already considered lean for a high-denomination note by the mid-1990s. The collaboration between Icelandic designer Kristín Þorkelsdóttir and De La Rue's Stephen Alan Fairbairn on the visual program was unusual — domestic artistic input paired with a British commercial printer's technical execution.
