Obverse description The obverse displays the coat of arms of Iceland centrally positioned in the field, depicting a quartered shield supported by four traditional guardian spirits: a dragon, a vulture, a bull, and a rock giant bearing a staff. The arms are rendered in fine relief with considerable sculptural detail. A circular beaded border frames the design. The legend reads · 1000 EITT ÞÚSUND KRÓNUR · along the upper arc, with · 1944 · to the left and · 1994 · to the right of the shield, and · ÍSLAND · along the lower arc, commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Republic of Iceland.
