| Additional information |
The Vasa warship sank in Stockholm harbor on its maiden voyage in 1628 — approximately 1,300 meters into its first journey — and was raised remarkably intact in 1961 after 333 years on the seabed. The recovery project was among the most ambitious maritime salvage operations ever undertaken in Scandinavia, and the ship's near-complete preservation in the low-salinity Baltic water made it an international sensation.
This coin was issued to mark the opening of the permanent Vasamuseet in Stockholm, which finally gave the restored hull a purpose-built home after decades in temporary facilities.
