Gustav III was shot at a masked ball at the Royal Opera House in Stockholm on 16 March 1792, dying thirteen days later — exactly two centuries before this coin was issued. The assassination, orchestrated by disaffected nobility who resented his autocratic consolidation of royal power, became one of the most dramatized events in Swedish history, later inspiring Verdi's opera Un ballo in maschera.
The .900 gold specification places this squarely in Sweden's commemorative bullion program of the early 1990s, which favored smaller-format high-gold pieces over the heavier issues common to the previous decade.
