Issued to mark Carl XVI Gustaf's 25th year on the throne, this small gold piece was struck by the Swedish Riksbank at a moment when commemorative gold from Scandinavian mints was genuinely uncommon. Gustaf ascended in September 1973 following the unexpected death of his grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf — his father having died in a plane crash in 1947, meaning Carl never served as crown prince in any conventional sense. The 1000 kronor face value was purely nominal; gold bullion prices made the coin's intrinsic worth immediately dominant.
