Issued to mark Queen Margrethe II's 70th birthday on April 16, 2010, this commemorative was produced under the authority of Danmarks Nationalbank in a relatively modest mintage typical of Danish gold commemoratives — limiting circulation almost entirely to collectors from the moment of issue. Margrethe II, who acceded to the throne in January 1972 following the death of her father Frederik IX, is the first Danish queen regnant since Margrethe I in the 14th century.
The .900 fineness follows the longstanding standard for Danish commemorative gold, consistent across the Nationalbank's modern issues rather than adopting the .999 fine gold favored by many contemporary European mints.
