Issued to mark the International Polar Year 2007–2008, a coordinated global research initiative with roots going back to the First International Polar Year of 1882–83. Denmark's participation carried particular institutional weight given its sovereignty over Greenland, one of the primary Arctic research territories involved in the modern program. The Royal Danish Mint produced this as part of a limited commemorative series, and mintages for Danish gold commemoratives of this period were typically kept tight — often under 2,000 pieces.
