Denmark's gold coinage largely disappeared from circulation after the country abandoned the gold standard in 1931, and modern gold issues from the Royal Danish Mint exist primarily as collector pieces with no pretense of monetary use. This 2009 issue belongs to a commemorative series celebrating Nordic natural phenomena — the aurora borealis being a subject rarely treated in European numismatics, where architectural and dynastic themes tend to dominate.
Margrethe II's fourth portrait, by sculptor Karin Birgitte Lund, was introduced in 2003 and remains the current effigy used on Danish coinage to this day.
