| Opmerkingen |
Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani — majority-owned by the Norwegian state since 1934 — issued scrip currency for use exclusively within the Longyearbyen settlement on Svalbard. The archipelago's peculiar legal status under the 1920 Spitsbergen Treaty meant Norwegian law applied only selectively, and the company ran what was functionally a closed company town: housing, shops, and wages all managed in-house. Scrip kept spending within the company's own retail infrastructure and simplified accounting at the edge of the Arctic.
By the late 1970s, when this denomination was in circulation, the Norwegian government was actively pushing to normalize Longyearbyen's economy. The scrip system was wound down shortly after, replaced by standard Norwegian kroner.
