1000 Kroner Great Norwegian Spitsbergen Coal Company

Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani — commonly abbreviated SNSK — operated a company scrip system on Svalbard because ordinary Norwegian krone notes were impractical in a remote Arctic mining settlement nearly entirely owned and administered by the company itself. Workers at Longyearbyen spent, saved, and were paid in this internal currency, which was only redeemable within the company's own stores and facilities. It never had legal tender status under Norwegian law.

The 1968 series replaced an earlier postwar issue and remained in use until Norway phased out the scrip system entirely in the 1970s as the archipelago's infrastructure normalized. The 1000 kroner denomination was the highest in the series — large enough that most would have passed through administrative hands rather than everyday miner transactions.

The "r" suffix on the SN64r reference indicates a reverse-only or reissue variant, distinguishing it from the primary SN64 type.
