Laos issued a wave of commemorative gold pieces in the late 2000s and early 2010s aimed squarely at the international thematic collector market — football, wildlife, Olympics — with minimal domestic circulation relevance. The 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa was the first held on the African continent, generating an enormous licensing-adjacent commemorative output from dozens of small issuing states with no connection to the tournament.
These Lao issues were almost certainly struck by a European contract mint, most likely in Germany or Austria, and sold directly into the collector trade.
