| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of the Lao People's Democratic Republic is depicted in the central field, featuring the That Luang stupa flanked by stylised foliage and framed by a cogwheel at the base. The circular legend 'THE LAO PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC' arcs around the upper portion of the coin within a beaded border. The denomination '1000 KIP' is inscribed in relief across the lower field. The entire design is struck in proof finish against a deeply mirrored background, lending strong contrast to the raised elements. |

Wat Phu is a Khmer temple complex in Champasak Province predating Angkor Wat by several centuries, and its inclusion on a Lao commemorative gold issue reflects the government's long-running effort to assert cultural ownership over monuments that straddle the contested heritage of mainland Southeast Asia. The site received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2001, four years before this coin was struck.
