Laos had no athletes compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The country's Olympic Committee has sent delegations to the Games, but medal prospects have remained distant, and the 1000 Kip silver issue is squarely a numismatic product — minted for export sale rather than any domestic commemorative purpose. The Bank of the Lao PDR has issued similar collector pieces tied to international sporting events since the 1990s, none of which circulated.
