Laos has issued collector-focused wildlife silver since the 1980s, largely aimed at European and Asian numismatic markets rather than domestic circulation. This piece was never intended to pass through Lao hands as currency — the face value is nominal, the mintage tightly controlled, and distribution handled almost entirely through overseas dealers and mints.
The Indochinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti) was functionally extinct in Laos by the time this coin was struck, with no confirmed breeding population remaining in the country.
